New York’s Meadow and Bark Responds to Alarming New Findings on Benzoyl Peroxide and Skincare Safety. Marisa Russell Offers Expert Insight on Safe, Plant-Powered Alternatives Amid Growing Concerns
Long Island, NY – October 9, 2024 – With alarming new reports about benzoyl peroxide (BPO) potentially producing carcinogenic byproducts, Meadow and Bark’s founder and Chief Alchemist, Marisa Russell, is offering her expertise on the importance of safe, conscious skincare. Russell, a leader in plant-powered skincare, will address these concerns during her upcoming media appearances, helping consumers make informed decisions about the products they use.
The October 7, 2024, Dermatology Times reported significant findings regarding BPO, highlighting that 34% of products tested exceeded the FDA’s two parts per million (ppm) limit for benzene, a known carcinogen. The report, based on research by Visher Labs, found that BPO’s stability is influenced by formulation, heat, and UV exposure, and some products contained benzene levels up to 12 times the FDA’s conditional limit. Recommendations included refrigerating BPO products, replacing them every 12 weeks, and avoiding heat and sunlight exposure to minimize benzene formation.
“These findings are concerning for anyone using conventional acne treatments, because, let's face it, the majority of users are adolescents” says Marisa Russell. “Consumers need to be aware of these risks, especially when safer, plant-powered alternatives exist.”
Russell, whose Meadow and Bark line is plant-powered, has been cited in Real Simple, Newsday, News 12, Social Life Magazine, and New Beauty. She is committed to transparency and education in skincare, offering products that are vegan, reef-safe, and free from harmful chemicals like benzoyl peroxide.
“Skincare should support your health, not put it at risk,” Russell emphasizes. “Meadow and Bark has always prioritized natural ingredients that protect the skin without compromising safety.”
Russell will speak on air in the coming days to further explain these concerns and offer consumers safe skincare solutions. Her goal is to educate the public about the importance of ingredient transparency and to advocate for safer alternatives free from carcinogens like benzene.
